Quarry chief bikes pledge

Biking events have been ditched at a Staffordshire quarry after an outcry by residents over a controversial scrambling meeting.

But the future of the Shoal Hill woodland and quarry site in Huntington, near Cannock, has still not been settled.

Residents have repeatedly voiced their fears for the future of the site since owners Stafford-based Inglewood Investments, allowed a motorbike scrambling event during the summer.

As a result, councillors and residents complained that dust engulfed their homes and they had to stay indoors to avoid the noise.

Inglewood director Tom Follows has now confirmed to the Express & Star that the event, held by World of Riding Events in August, will not be repeated, but would not comment on what the future of Shoal Hill will be. The news has been welcomed by South Staffordshire councillor Jeff Ashley and MP Gavin Williamson. However, both men still want assurances about the future of Shoal Hill.

Weekly bin collections are rejected

Weekly bin collections will not return to thousands of homes in Staffordshire after councils today announced they were rejecting the offer of government funding to bring them back.

Controversial fortnightly collections will now remain for thousands of families in South Staffordshire, Stafford and Lichfield.

But council bosses in Cannock have revealed they are “interested” in the cash incentive.

Comunities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said he believed every household had “a basic right” to have rubbish collected every week and announced councils would be offered a share of £250 million to end fortnightly collections.
